Tiger Leaping Gorge, tucked between the Yulong Snow Mountain and the Haba Mountains, offers one of the most attractive trekking in Southwest China. Its name came from a legendary story about a hunter who was chasing a tiger. The tiger escaped the hunter by leaping over the river thus the name, ”Tiger Leaping Gorge.”
The gorge is divided into upper, middle and lower Tiger Leaping Gorge. The entire length of the gorge is approximately 30 kilometers (18.6 miles). The narrowest part of the gorge is only about 30 meters (100 feet). At its greatest depth it is said to be more than 3000 meters (9842 feet).
This area is actually the border for Zhongdian and Lijing and is under the control of both areas. This site is wonderful, but in the midst of its great beauty lies danger if you fail to be careful! You should travel this area with other people, watch for falling rocks and take plenty of with you!
