Located in northeast Qinghai Province, 150 kilometers from Xining, Qinghai Lake covers an area of 4,500 square kilometers, 3,200 meters above sea level. It is the largest inland salt lake in China, and is famous for alepidote, fresh, tender, which grows 500 grams 10 years. The ellipse-shaped lake looks like a huge white poplar leave setting among alpine prairie. Scenery in Qinghai lake varies according to seasons. The Bird Island is an interesting and charming place on the western shore of Qinghai Lake. The island is less than 1 square kilometer and is a paradise for varieties of birds. The protection policy of the local government makes island even more popular among birds. Each March and April, when ice covering the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau begins to melt, more than 100,000 migrant birds, including bar-headed geese, ruddy shel-ducks, cormorants, swans, and brown-headed gulls from southern China and the Indian Ocean fly to the island to breed. The flying birds blot out the sky and cover the sun, forming a splendid view on the island. During that period, flocks of birds shelter the whole island and bird eggs can be found everywhere. Visitors can hear birds twitters far away.
