The Guiyuan Temple is Wuhan's most famous Buddhist temple, both in terms of religion and architecture. First built in 1658, the name of the temple is originated from a Buddhist short verse.
Covering an area of 20,000 square meters and full of garden feature, now there exist three main buildings: the Precious Hall of the Great Hero, the Depositary of Buddhist Texts and the Arhats (Buddhist Saints) Hall .The most famous and featured is the five hundred skillfully scrlptured arhat statues, each different from the other in bodily posture and facial expression -- sitting, sleeping, laughing, angry. The temple also boasts of a rich collection of stone carvings, paintings, and Buddhist scriptures.
There is also a good vegetarian restaurant here.
