Beihai (North Lake) Park, located in the heart of Beijing, is the oldest ancient imperial garden in Chinese history. Since the 9th century, the feudal rulers of the Liao, Jin, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties had made it their travelling lodge. It covers an area of 68 hectares, of which the lake area occupies more than one half.
In 1179, an artificial hill was made in imitation of the fairy hills, and the Qionghua Dao (Jade Flower Isle) was built here. Also, a lake named Xihuachi (Western Pool of Flower) was then excavated. The hill was further decorated with rocks shipped from remote places. The isle presents many scenic attractions, such as Temple of Everlasting Peace, Tablet of Spring Shade, Hall of Ripples and so on. Besides, the 9-Dragon Screen in the park is well-known for its dexterous craftsmanship. It was in the Qing Dynasty that the magnificent White Pagoda was built on the site of a previous palace.
