Ancient Culture Street, in the northeastern part of the old city, is the birthplace and cradle for Tianjin. The site area in planning is 224,200sqm, from Tongbei Road in the north to Shuigao Street in the South and from Haihe River in the east to Dongma Road in the west. Tianhou Palace is at the center, which is the oldest building existed in Tianjin. There are many shops on both South and North Street. With its antiquity and culture, Ancient Culture Street is praised to be the palace of Tianjin folk art.
Within the confines of the street is the Tianhuo Temple (Tianhou gong), paying tribute to the Goddess of the sea. The temple was apparently built in 1326 AD in deference to the heavenly Goddess and in hope of protection for Tianjin's oceangoing population. Since then the temple has been renovated a number of times. In 1984, it was turned into a museum displaying local customs, including some fine examples of the Tianjin clay works and woodblocks from the nearby village of Yangliuqing.
