Shenzhen is located in the very south of Guangdong Province. Overlooking Hong Kong to the south and bordering Kowloon, this area is commonly referred to as Hong Kong's "backyard". It is consisted of the Special Economic Zone and Baoan county, with a floor space of 2020 square kilometres and a population of 1.9 million.
The area is actually divided into three parts, the Special Economic Zone (SEZ), Shenzhen City and Shenzhen County. Virtually all the action is situated around the SEZ which is the business and financial heart of the city and the reason why most visitors come to Shenzhen.
In a general economic strength survey on Chinese cities, Shenzhen was rated as the fifth strongest. Shenzhen owes that honor to its foresighted city plan, convenient transportation and communication, adequate power and water supply, sound financial system, mature educational and medical services, tourism network, booming technology industry and a subway system (under construction).
