Nanchang, the capital of Jiangxi Province and the center of the provincial economy, politics, science and technology, and culture and education, is an old city Jiangnan (jiangnan means south of the Changjinang River.) with a long history, known as a heroic city because of the August 1 Nanchang Uprising. It covers a area of 74,236 square kilometers and with 1.57million people.
Nanchang’s climatic features are the central subtropical damp monsoon climate with plenty rainfall and sunlight, long frost-free. Its average temperature are 17.5 C in spring, 28.2 C in summer, 20 C autumn and 6.3 C winter.
Nanchang is an old city, first built during the early Han Dynasty by the name of Yuzhang Prefecture and then Hongzhou Superintendant's Prefecture during the Sui Dynasty, and again changed into Nanchang Prefecture during the late Tang Dynasty of the Five Dynasties and when Li Jing established his southern capital there. On August 1927,under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, Zhou Enlai, Zhu De, He Long, Ye Ting, Liu Bocheng and others organized the Nanchang Uprising which fired the first shot against the Kuomintang reactionaries. Hence the great People's Liberation Army of China was born and the city of honoured as a "heroic city".
Nanchang is a beautiful city where literary men gathered. "Ode to the Tengwangge Tower" by Wang Bo, the unique paintings of Badashanren (Zhu Da's pen name) and so on are among the outstanding works in Chinese literature and art. Its tourist attractions include Jinggangshan, Lushan, Jingdezhen, the Headquarters of the August First Nanchang Uprising, the Jiangxi Provincial Historical Museum, the Revolutionary Exhibition Center, the former residence of Badashanren at Qingyunpu, the August First Park (Baihuazhou), people's park, the Public Square Garden, Nanpuyuan and so on.
