Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan Province and is located in the middle of Sichuan Province in the west part of the Sichuan basin. Chengdu has jurisdiction over 8 districts, 4 cities, and 8 counties, with an area of 12,390 square kilometers and a population of some 9.8 million.
Chengdu is one of the 24 well-known historical cities approved by the Sichuan provincial committee and the State Council of China. 2,300 years ago, King Kaiming the 1Xth of the Shu State relocated his capital here. In 256BC, the Shu County Governor Li Bing and his son built the Dujiang Dam. Since then the Chengdu plain has never had any flood or drought disasters and its farm and handicraft industries have prospered. The Chengdu plain has hence been referred to as the "Kingdom of Heaven." Since then, Chengdu has become the state capital of Sichuan, and an important political, economic, cultural and military center in the southwest. It was one of the 5 famous cities in Han Dynasty, and the best commercial city second to Yangzhou only in Tang Dynasty. It was also the second largest cosmopolitan city of the North Song Dynasty (960-1127) next to its capital city Bianjing, where Jiaozi, the earliest paper money in the world, was first circulated.
Chengdu lies in subtropical humid climate with free-frost period of about 337 days and average rainfall of 900-1,300mm per year, annual average humidity is 82%, and the sunshine ratio is 28%. Its average temperature is 15.5C -16.5C and its rainfall is average rainfall of 900-1,300mm annually.
The principal scenic attractions in Chengdu are the temple dedicated to the memory of Zhuge Liang (a hero of the Three Kingdoms), the Humble Cottage of Du Fu (a great poet), Yongling Tomb, the Wangjiang Tower, Funan River, the Baoguang Temple, the Panda Breeding Center, Dujiang Weir, Mount Qingcheng, the Xiling Snow-capped Mountains, the Liu Family Mansion, the Shrine to the Goddess of Mercy, the Dragon Pool, the Huashuiwan Hot Springs, Mount Jiufengshan, Nine-Dragon Gully, Mount Jiufengshan, Nine-Dragon Gully, Mount Tiantai, the Qingyang Temple, Mount Heming, and the Chunyang Shrine.
