Jiangsu Province is located on the east coast of China. The total land area of the province is 102,600 square kilometers, with a population of 65,350,000. The population density comes out first in China. The province is crossed by the Yangtze River from east to west and by the Grand Canal from north to south, while Lake Taihu and Lake Hongze, both located within Jiangsu's borders, are two of the largest lakes in China. In addition, the province is blessed with more than 900 kilometers of coastline.
The name "Jiangsu" comes from the combination of the first Chinese character of "Jiang Ning" and "Su Zhou" (two prefectures in the Qing Dynasty); its short form is "Su". The provincial capital is Nanjing.
Jiangsu Province is situated in the temperate zone and subtropical zone, with a humid and semi-humid monsoon climate. The frost-free period lasts about 200--240 days. The annual average precipitation is about 800-1200 millimeters. There is more rain when plums are ripe at the time when spring is changing into summer. It rains for a short time, but frequently. It is a common phenomenon that it is raining while the sun is shining. Rains of this period are generally called "plum rains". But on the other hand, because of damp climate and appropriate temperature, mould grows quickly, so this period is also called "mould rains". Typhoons often hit this province at the end of summer and the beginning of autumn.
Jiangsu Province is one of China's developed provinces and areas with developed communications. Highway and waterway transportation is very convenient. The Yangtze River flows through the whole province from west to east, and the Great Canal flowing north to south links up various rives, canals and lakes, so that inland waterways extend in all directions. Water transport volume amounts to two-thirds of the total provincial transport volume.
The provincial agriculture is well developed. Output of rice, cotton, oil, cocoon, pigs and fresh-water fish occupy an important place in China.
The provincial’s principal industries are electronics, machinery, locomotive manufacture, electric power, chemical industry, metallurgy, textile industry, food industry, papermaking, etc, which play an important part in the Chinese industrial production. Among main industrial centers are Nanjing, Wuxi, Suzhou, Changzhou, Nantong, etc. Besides, local industries serving agricultural production are widespread. For example, there are tractor manufacturing factories, chemical fertilizer factories, etc. in various places.
There are a lot of Scenic Spots in Jiangsu Province. Among them, Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Tomb in Nanjing, Xuanwu Lake, the West Lake in Yangzhou, the Tai Lake in Wuxi, Garden of the Master of the Nets in Suzhou.
